WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN EXPECTING… PREGNANCY SAFE SKINCARE CHOICES.

Navigating skincare during pregnancy and breastfeeding can be daunting, given the abundance of misinformation online. While there’s a plethora of advice out there, it’s crucial to adhere to certain precautions:
  • 1. Avoid Laser Treatments: Laser treatments should be avoided during pregnancy due to potential risks to the developing fetus.
  • 2. Steer Clear of IPL: Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments are not recommended for pregnant women as they can also pose risks.
  • 3. Say No to Topical Vitamin A Products: Products containing retinol or other forms of vitamin A should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as they may be absorbed into the bloodstream and potentially harm the baby. At Beautyologist we have products that you can use which are safe and behave similarly so you can still get the benefits during pregnancy.
  • 4. Exercise Caution with Essential Oils. While aromatherapy can be soothing, it’s essential to exercise caution during pregnancy. Certain essential oils may be harmful or cause adverse reactions, so it’s best to consult with a healthcare professional before using them.
During this special time, it’s important to prioritise the safety of both you and your baby.  There are natural changes that will occur and are expected during pregnancy such as:
  1. Melasma, often referred to as “pregnancy mask,” is a common skin condition that can occur during pregnancy due to hormonal changes. It is characterised by the development of dark, discolored patches on the face, particularly on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper lip. These patches may vary in size and shape and are typically more noticeable in women with darker skin tones.
During pregnancy, hormonal fluctuations, particularly increased levels of estrogen and progesterone, can trigger the overproduction of melanin in the skin, leading to the development of melasma. Additionally, exposure to sunlight can exacerbate the condition, as ultraviolet (UV) radiation stimulates the production of melanin. We can prepare your skin for this and support it during pregnancy to prevent and protect. At Beautyologist we do have treatments to assist with this condition and can guide you.
  1. Dryness during pregnancy is a common skin concern that many expectant mothers experience due to hormonal changes and increased blood flow to the skin. These hormonal shifts can lead to a reduction in the skin’s natural oil production, resulting in dryness, itchiness, and tightness. Additionally, environmental factors such as cold weather and indoor heating can exacerbate dry skin symptoms during pregnancy.
We encourage cooler showers, exfoliation and a deep nourishing body oil.
  1. Changes in Hair Growth: Hormonal fluctuations can also affect hair growth, leading to changes such as increased hair thickness or volume in some areas and hair thinning or shedding in others.
  2. Acne / Breakouts Hormonal changes during pregnancy can lead to an increase in oil production, potentially causing breakouts or exacerbating existing acne. Beautyologist Dermal Therapists can help direct you.
  3. Stretch Marks: As the abdomen expands to accommodate the growing baby, stretch marks may develop on the abdomen, breasts, thighs, or buttocks due to the stretching of the skin. Do not fret, at Beautyologist we have had some brilliant results with Skin Needling. We recommend having your baby, healing and then coming to see us for a consultation within 3 months.
  4. Spider Veins and Varicose Veins: Increased blood volume and pressure on the veins can lead to the development of spider veins (small, red or purple veins) or varicose veins (swollen, twisted veins), particularly in the legs.
  5. Linea Nigra: A dark line may appear vertically down the abdomen, known as linea nigra, due to hormonal changes stimulating increased melanin production.
  6. Glowing Skin: Many pregnant individuals experience a radiant glow due to increased blood circulation, which can give the skin a healthy and luminous appearance. Embrace and enjoy if this is you!
