Inflammation and injury in the epidermis stimulates melanocytes to increase melanin synthesis. Enhanced by UVR exposure. Darker skins are more at risk.
The more servere the injury the increase in the post inflammatory hyperpigmentation becoming more permanent. Injury can be as little at a scratch to more servere as third degree burns. Damage can occur to both the epidermis and the dermis. Hyperpigmentation resembles brown patchy scattered spots.
